For Woody its an opportunity for redemption, a chance for some significance to his life as it winds down. A good story line acted out superbly by everyone.

It's not exciting and the characters are not the most likeable.. but they're interesting and multi-layered and the actors (especially Dern) nail the atmosphere and their roles. I can understand why some people feel like "nothing happens" but to me, that's the joy of it.
